How to
Measure for Your Awning
Measuring
the width and the projection for your awning is simple.
-
The
width is the area running along the house, watch out for
certain objects that may get in the way, such as windows,
doors, lamps, bump outs, chimney, etc.
-
It's
nice to have 10-12 inches of space across the area to mount;
10 inches of space without a hood, 12 inches with a hood
cover.
-
If
going under the soffit, 10 inches of space above any doors
and windows is nice. You may want to limit the projection
of the awning to 10 feet if space is limited.
-
If
space is limited, and you desire a large projection or more
height, a roof mount is the best option.
- Measuring
projection is the distance from the house to the desired range
out from the house. Many times the projection will extend
out to the deck rail or end of the patio, or perhaps a little
past it. Not being able to have the full projection of the
area is quite common. This is okay, you still have many square
feet of coverage and this will be a great place for the grill.
- Typical
mounting height is from 8-10 feet off the deck or patio. Double
story homes where the awning is going between the two levels
should have a mounting height of 9-10 feet off the deck or
patio.
- If tucking under the soffit, watch for heights below 7'6". There may not be enough room to install awning because of windows or a door in the way. Even if there is nothing in the way, the awning may be too low once brought all the way out, especially for those projections over 10'. In this case, you may want to consider a roof mount.
- For larger
projections, 11' 6" x 13', a roof mount is recommended
if below 8' in height above deck or patio.
